8. Custom In-Ear Systems

Since the beginning of the in-ear era, there have been custom-made in-ear systems from various manufacturers that can be specifically tailored to the needs of the customer. Pioneers of these products include manufacturers like Ultimate Ears and Future Sonic from the USA.

Custom In-Ear Systems

These in-ear systems are predominantly made using two-way technology. Since crafting the housing shell is already quite expensive, the additional use of two-way technology isn't a significant cost factor. Ultimate Ears also offers a three-way technology in-ear system (UE-7 PRO™), which has an even more pronounced bass range.

Different in-ear manufacturers equip their custom-made earphones with various features. A common feature among all manufacturers is the soft inner earpiece with a hard outer shell. This technique greatly increases wearing comfort and enhances noise isolation. However, this technique is very complex and costly. In general, custom-made in-ear systems provide the best possible external noise isolation of all systems.

Some manufacturers also use directly pluggable cable systems on the earphones. This significantly increases operational reliability since the cable is constantly subjected to stress. If the cable develops a loose connection or breaks, it can be replaced in a short time. The plug systems are gold-plated and very securely fitted, so the cable cannot come loose. With fixed embedded cables, quick repairs are not possible, and the device must be repaired by the manufacturer, which can lead to logistical problems.

Another feature is an additional filter insert, allowing the external noise isolation to be adjusted in different stages. For example, the manufacturer Ultimate Ears offers this with its in-earsystem UE-5 Ambient™. An exchangeable acoustic damping element is inserted from the outside into an additional bore. These damping elements are available in very fine graduations from 2.5 dB to 25 dB attenuation. This allows the user to adjust the ambient effect to their personal needs and, for instance, the stage size. This is very advantageous for artists who interact with the audience, such as singers.

Another advantage of these custom-made systems is that they can be color-matched to the customer's exact preferences, making them almost invisible when worn. Decorative colors and the addition of gemstones are also possible. There are no limits to creativity.

A downside of these systems is that they are relatively expensive due to the intricate custom construction. They are also not quickly replaceable or repairable in case of loss or defect. In such cases, only a universal system can serve as a temporary replacement.
