A classy guitar on a budget

The Harley Benton SC-500 WH is a single-cut guitar from the manufacturer's Vintage Series and combines a solid basswood body with a carved basswood top and a set maple neck, a construction that provides plenty of sustain. The neck in turn features a 22-fret blackwood fingerboard that, together with the black pickguard, provides the perfect contrast to the guitar's high-gloss white finish and has the classic 648mm (24.75") scale length with which SC-style guitars have long been associated. The fingerboard is adorned with block inlays for improved orientation when playing, and the guitar's classy look is completed by cream-coloured body and fingerboard binding as well as three-ply front binding and high-quality gold-plated hardware. Last but not least, the SC-500 WH comes loaded with a pair of vintage-style humbucking pickups that provide a full, powerful sound.

Classic specifications

The Harley Benton SC-500 WH Vintage Series features a comfortable C-shaped neck profile that makes it ideal for both rhythm and lead playing, and its shorter scale length will make life easier for younger guitarists as well as those with smaller hands. The fingerboard in turn has a large radius of 350mm (approximately 14"), which will facilitate string bends even with a very low string action - helped along by the .010-gauge strings with which the guitar comes as standard. The SC-500 WH additionally features a double-action truss rod, which comprises two firmly connected metal rods with counter-rotating threads and can be used to adjust the neck bow perfectly.

Timeless design, individual sound

SC-style guitars have been popular for decades among players of many different genres and particularly among the Rock and Metal contingent, but many guitarists who have long dreamed of owning one of these classic instruments have been put off by the hefty price tag. Those days are over now however, thanks to the Harley Benton SC-500 WH. Beginners will appreciate this guitar's affordable price and playability, and it is also a good choice for more experienced players who already own a much more expensive single-cut model and want a solid and reliable backup guitar. And no less important is the sonic versatility provided by the guitar's twin humbuckers and its control layout, which comprises separate volume and tone controls for each pickup as well as a three-way toggle switch.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of numerous guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

Variety is the spice of life

Thanks to the classic combination of a stopbar tailpiece and Tune-o-Matic bridge, the Harley Benton SC-500 WH Vintage Series will stay in tune even when the player changes tunings on the fly, making it a good choice for Rock and Alternative music as well as for Metal in its many guises. Its two humbucking pickups are designed to deliver everything from crunch through to full-on distortion, so chunky powerchords, heavy riffs, and even searing lead tones are very much on the menu. That is not all, however: This guitar will also handle clean tones very well, so soft ballads, thick jazzy tones, and smoky Blues licks are also no problem. Even without a tremolo system, the SC-500 WH thus promises plenty of playing fun.

In the spotlight: Double-Action Truss Rod

The double-action truss rod consists of two firmly joined metal rods with opposing threads. It is inserted into the neck and covered by the fingerboard, which is glued to the front of the neck. A clockwise turn of the nut at the end of the truss rod (also called the T-rod) straightens the neck, bringing the strings closer to the fingerboard, and in extreme cases causes a convex neck bow so that the strings rest on top of the middle frets. An anti-clockwise turn, on the other hand, causes a concave neck bow, which significantly raises the strings above the middle frets. Double-action truss rods are mainly used in thin necks because they fit into a narrow groove and therefore take up only a small amount of space.

This is a fabulous guitar for the price. The finish is flawless and is one of the few solid color finished guitars I own. It is a great color. I didn't think the super access heel would make much of a difference but it really makes playing up the neck easy and fast. The headstock is quite nice considering there are only so many ways to change the headstock. The diamond design is very cool. Even nicer that the "G" word diamond, IMHO. It needed only minor adjustments on the set up. It has a good low end growl and a very warm mid range. Action was low. Frets are even and well polished. It weighs a bit more than my other Les Paul' but I will be sitting most of the time so that makes no real difference. I am very excited about this purchase. So much so, I just purchased 4 more Harley Benton guitars with cases for my 2 boys. Yes, I bought them 2 each. The people at Thomann have been wonderful. They have responded very quickly to my questions and have been professional and polite. You can't go wrong with this purchase. Looking for more gear now!!!

Pt
WOW - too good to be true
Permisson to Rock 17.02.2024
I am a semi-pro singer wannabe Randy Rhodes cream LP enthusiast who so far had the choice of the HB, the Burny, or the FGN upto £1400.00 I went with the HB as the reviews read fab. On opening I was really pleased to say the colour leans more towards a cream white than artic and I cannot see any blemishes or scuffs which to me isn't an issue as its gonna be a working guitar. (packaged impeccably - lots of soft stuff and doubled boxed)

On pluggin in, I noticed the action too high for me. Not to screw things up, I rang thomann support and like no other business in the modern world, I didnt get given 12 options to meander through, Thomas pick up the phone and told me to go bridge screws before truss rod. etc. very helpul. Action was lowered and the games began. No fret buzz or loss of note occurred on bends in the 12-21 fret area :-)

I have a GIBSON LP STANDARD in tobacco 1950s, a custom TOKAI (chuckier neck) and this HB is up there. The neck is definately wider at the 10-15 frets but that suits my funny hands. At first I thought there was a definitive fret resistance compared to the LP due to the price and quality etc etc, but through the evening of playing, my left had started to not try too hard and the gliding began. All my standards I play from CRAZY TRAIN to BEAT IT, or IS THIS LOVE were a breeze.
The sustain and easy to bend and hold a note seemed comparable to my Tokai if not better. And in fact the clarity of lick when playing fast seemed better to my ear which gives you confidence to keep fretting better. But that could be my ear and over excited opinion. Please note I practice through a YAMAHA THII 30 and go live with a POD GO so much sound will be pretty generic with any guitar £100 or £5000.
But for me, the fret work was excellent

Compared to other reviews commenting on this, I have tuned the guitar once, and not had to retune and feel the tuners are quite sturdy and reliable but lets see how this go's in the future.

BTW its lighter than my Tokai no idea of actual weight but sat great on my shoulders with no weight distribution issues.

To conclude, I was after a Randy / MIck Ronson guitar look for my new act and this axe works and feels great so ME happy !!

All I can say is Thomann / HB provided a great product and support service to me here in the UK. Ill look at another guitar for sure.

**** Maybe if you request Thomann provide to guitar to a low action during set up prior to delivery, then I am sure they would accomodate to a job ***

Thank you to THomann

* Ill re-review in 3 months if there any updates.

A
Unbelievable playing
Anonymous 05.03.2022
This was my second HB guitar. So I was expecting a lot. I was not disappointed. This guitar feels like a dream. It plays amazingly smooth and looks cooler than an ice berg. The fretboard and neck feels fast and comfortable. The unique cut on the set neck looks beautiful, and looks like it has more contact between the body and neck, making it stronger. Love this guitar.

LS
Great value!!!
Leigh Shayne 28.09.2020
What can I say. After reading lots of reviews online I took the plunge and bought this guitar. I have been playing guitar now for 48 years and have had many guitars during that time. I currently have 8 guitars now including a Gibson Les Paul Custom but I can honestly say this HB is my favourite to play. I had pre conceived ideas that I would have to change out the pickups on this but can honestly say the pickups are really good.

Just a couple of very small issues (which won't spoil things for me) The Gold coloured Bridge and Tail piece are slightly different colours and the pickup selector switch wiggles about ( I am going to replace it) The tuning heads are okay and hold tuning but aren't brilliant, something else I may change in the future. BUT, and I say that in capital letters, this a £149 guitar!!!!!!!! Great, great value for the money even with a few very small niggles

Buy one, you won't be disappointed!
