Are Yamaha cost cutting on their Custom saxophones?
Tophat400 11.11.2022
I have been playing Yamaha Saxophones since 1985, I have a YTS 62 and a YSS 62, both purchased new direct from their warehouse in Milton Keynes UK. Both of these Saxophones played straight out of the box, with no adjustment needed.
When, in August, I decided to buy a Custom Alto, I asked Thomann if I could have an unopened one from the warehouse . Which is what they did. I knew that after travelling to me in the United Kingdom it could possibly need the attention of my repair technician and was happy with this. The Saxophone arrived and I used it a couple of times at a course that I am attending , some of the venting of the keywork was a bit out. I did not feel comfortable with using it on the couple of gigs that I had so used an alternative saxophone. So on the 1st November I managed, at last, to take the 875 to the tech. He loves Yamaha saxophones, he plays an earlier 875-EX, apart from the venting the other thing that he picked up on were the pearls. The Bis key pearl was not domed and all the edges on all pearls were not rounded off, also not as concaved as previous models. So are Yamaha trying to save some cost in manufacturing by using inferior pearls and poor quality control? Also the new style case looks cheap and nasty, sorry!
Anyway, I paid £30.00 to have the 875 setup correctly and it is worth it, but the days of playing straight out of the box are gone.
The staff at Thomann were very helpful and none of the issues with the saxophone were to do with Thomann, your customer service is brilliant! Thank you.

Ein fantastisches Saxophon !
Blue Note G. 10.07.2021
