Convincing playing feel on the go

The Kawai ES-920 B stage piano features a carefully selected variety of different Kawai piano sounds, and the surprisingly low weight of this instrument makes it the ideal solution for use on the go – when playing live, for instance. On top of that, the sophisticated Responsive Hammer III (RHIII) mechanism with pressure point simulation and triple sensor provides a convincing playing feel. Incidentally, the piano's Bluetooth function can be used in two different ways: While the built-in speakers or connected headphones can play back music from smartphones, tablets, or PCs, these devices can also directly exchange MIDI data with the piano. Plenty of accessories for optimum comfort both on the road and at home are also available.

Get connected

The ES-920 B delivers sounds taken from Kawai's proprietary SK-EX, SK-5, and EX grand pianos, with an additional 35 sounds on top. A 256-note polyphony and two built-in 20W speakers measuring 8x12cm each are responsible for the sound, which players can jazz up using the four-band EQ. In addition to the usual connections (line in and out, USB to host, USB to device for MP3 and WAV files, MIDI in and out, and pedal connections), the stage piano also comes with some small and useful special features: For instance, two different headphone jacks on the front left side, one for 6.3mm and one for 3.5mm, allow for connection of pretty much every headphone model without the need for adapters.

On the road and in the living room

The Kawai ES-920 B is a stage piano for discerning players: It offers grand piano sounds made by Kawai, can be played right off the bat thanks to the included sustain pedal, and can be placed on optionally available stands such as the HM-5 B stand. Those who like to practise at home with headphones can utilise the instrument's presets designed exclusively for the "phones" outputs to tailor the sound to suit open, semi-open, or closed-back headphones, as well as for in-ear monitoring. Three different effects (amp simulation, reverb, and modulation) enable players to edit songs directly on the piano, and the instrument's extensive connection options for computers, smartphones, or tablets allow for seamless integration into each musician's own workflow. And with its low weight of just 17kg, the piano cuts a fine figure as a touring companion for solo artists.

About Kawai

Kawai is a Japanese manufacturer which has specialised in building upright and grand pianos since its inception in 1927. Since 1986, Kawai has also been producing digital pianos. Right from the start, the name "Kawai" stood for innovation: For example, Kawai produced the first digital piano with keys made entirely of wood, and also made the first keyboard to truly replicate the action of a grand piano. The list of artists who have chosen Kawai is long, and it includes both Classical pianists like Warren Mailley Smith, Ashley Fripp, and Mikhail Pletnev, and popular keyboardists like Herbert Grönemeyer, Ingo Reidl (Pur), and Don Airey (Deep Purple), among others.

Ready for any small live gig

Singers who want to accompany themselves on the piano during small live gigs and need to bring their own PA system will find good use for the easily set up Kawai ES-920 B, which simply needs to be placed on a table or a height-adjustable keyboard stand and connected either to the included foot pedal, or to a three-part sustain pedal unit, such as the Kawai GFP-3. For sound reinforcement, users can either connect to the PA system or use a keyboard amp, which depending on the model can also amplify a vocal microphone. Playback tracks can in turn easily be imported from a connected USB stick.

Beautiful, affordable, feature rich instrument
Eskael 26.03.2021
As a beginner with just 5 months of experience, I'm afraid that my review won't bring much to your lives, but I'm blown away with this instrument.
It has a beautiful, highly customizable sampled sound with a well developed, easy to use PianoRemote app. Action is lighter than Roland's PHA-50 and far more responsive - Roland FP-90x felt heavy and sluggish in comparison. It feels like there is not that much depth after you press-down a key and the keys bounce a lot upon release, both of which I found distracting at first, but quickly got used to it. There are visible jumps in height between certain white keys, but again that's just minor nit-picking.
Build quality is great, and I don't get how people can have problems with fingerprints - I don't have that issue at all. I don't travel with it, but I appreciate the instrument's weight, as it doesn't feel like it will break the furniture while playing it.
For the first time in my life, I'm actually in love... and it even says 'Goodbye' to me, when I have to go away for a bit.

a
Sturdy, beautiful, rich sound
aaronwuzhere 16.01.2023
From the perspective of a guy who began the deep journey into piano world since last couple of years this instrument is a wholesome. Before I have had some experience with some entry level DPs and mid-range. But obviously my ES920 is one step ahead of them.

Pros (ofc everything is subjective):
- lovely action. Personally for me who has never played real concert piano this weight grade of the keys is nearly perfect. It's really easy for stuff like tremolos, trills etc. But as it was already mentioned by other customers it's lighter than PHA-50 in Roland FP90X and NWX in Yamaha P-515
- samples of pianos here are astonishing. Kawai did great job with sampling their flagship instruments SK-EX, SK-5, EX. Worth to mention that you can customize behavior of the sound and respond of the instrument in 19 parameters of Virtual Technician either directly through the menu buttons or via mobile app.
- well made and responsive pedals. I've bought my DP with F302 pedal unit and HM5 furniture stand. By default it comes with F-10H sustain pedal which is also very robust. Also you can get it with triple pedal block GFP-3 as an alternative, which I did later and quality is same durable and responsive.
- rhythm section will be fun to play with.

cons:
- action. yeah it might sound controversial from me according to my first point, but for some people (especially with real piano playing experience) this action might be too light and plastic feeling. Sound of bouncing keys might be too loud and annoying for people who practice in late time.
- lack of features, not various sound bank and incomplete General MIDI. I mean come on guys. This is a premium portable DP and you're not able to put there some more other sounds and features?! I mainly play on this instrument piano sounds only, for the rest I just connect it to VSTs.

To sum all of the mentioned above I'd definitely recommend this for buying. And thanks Thomann btw. You guys are rock!

M
Great portable piano
Mikejla 04.02.2021
I am really happy to be an owner of Kawai ES920. For me it is a great portable piano. I travel a lot and now at least I can take my piano wherever I go. What I like about ES920? After one month of using I still admire the sound, the keyboard work and the pedal. These features are very close to the real piano (when you push the pedal you can even hear the sound, which produce the freed strings :)). The piano is also very light so I can take it by my own, I don't need to ask anybody for help (I like it very much). I like also how it looks like. The blue lights which are on the top are subtle and they don't disturb during playing.
Till now I've just found only one thing I don't like - when you touch the body of ES920 your fingerprints stay on it and they are very visible. But this disadvantage doesn't have much influence on my very good opinion about this piano.

E
Beautiful piano sound, so-so speakers, okay features
Edael 05.02.2021
The main piano sound is really beautiful: sweet, rich, natural and resonant. Lots of options (basic setting + virtual technician) to tweak it to your taste. Not many other sounds (don't expect trumpets, guitars, weird stuff etc, it's basically just keyboard instruments and strings), but generally of good quality. Rythms and automatic accompaniments, though not so many, are a fun feature that a lot of digital pianos don't have.
The onboard speakers are powerful but on the bassy side and lack some clarity for my taste, so I had to increase the brightness and cut the bass to get where I like it more. Fortunately, you can save all your settings and tweaking in a registration bank and recall them with the switch of a button. Also, the action is a bit hard especially in the lower half and the keys are a bit noisy.
