In a class of its own

Just as the term "fridge" has become a by-word for a refrigerator, "Clavinova" has become the generic term for a digital piano. With the CLP-700 series, Yamaha has given its flagship product a complete makeover, particularly with regard to the grand piano voices. Let's take a closer look at the CLP-775, available in a range of finishes that come at slightly different prices. For those who are happy with a more modest piece of gear, a less calibrated keyboard, and a less powerful internal audio system, the CLP-735 or CLP-745 would be a great choice, in addition to which it is also worth noting that Yamaha offers an instrument in a grand piano design, namely the CLP-765 GP ("GP" stands for "Grand Piano" here).

The sensitivity of Grand Touch

The CLP-775 boasts a "Grand Touch" keyboard with 88 differently weighted keys, linear graded hammers, and a simulated double escapement action. The white keys are made of wood and the black keys from synthetic ebony, guaranteeing players many years of uninterrupted playing pleasure. As for the grand piano sound, the CLP-775 offers two GP voices - a Yamaha CFX and a Bosendörfer Imperial. The "Mozart" and "Chopin" voices offer players unique access to the authentic sound of 18th and 19th century pianofortes respectively, and finally, 34 other voices cover a broad range of other acoustic pianos, electric pianos, and much more besides. The CLP-775 is very easy to navigate using the LCD control panel or the dedicated app, and it also has a Bluetooth interface which provides MIDI and audio signal transmission.

A digital piano with half pedaling

Yamaha offers a five-year warranty on the CLP-775, subject to registration within six months of purchase. This piano is aimed as much at experienced pianists as professionals who are looking for a good key action and a genuine grand piano sound. The CLP-745 will also attract pianists who are already familiar with Yamaha and the Clavinova range, and who have had the opportunity to play one and enjoyed the experience. The integrated sound system comprises six speakers, two each with outputs of 20, 42, and 50 watts. As mentioned above, the CLP-700 series also includes more budget-friendly pianos with less powerful speakers and a more streamlined profile. Coming back to the CLP-775, this digital piano also has three pedals which are not simply on/ off switches but allow players to use subtle techniques like half pedaling. The sustain pedal uses "Grand Piano Response" technology, while the two USB ports ("To host" and "To device") make it possible to connect the instrument to a computer or other USB-compatible equipment.

About Yamaha

For decades, Yamaha has been one of the world's best-known manufacturers of musical instruments and audio technology. The Japanese company's long history began at the end of the 19th century with the harmonium. The product range has constantly expanded since then, which has made Yamaha one of the few manufacturers today to offer almost the entire range of existing musical instruments: From upright and grand pianos to guitars, wind instruments, and bowed string instruments and from drums and percussion to electronic keyboards and synthesizers. Yamaha is also a major force in the field of audio engineering as a manufacturer of mixing consoles, amplifiers, PA systems, and more. Yamaha's guiding principle is to combine traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology.

Two can play that game

The Yamaha CLP-775 has a velocity-sensitive keyboard, and this feature can be adjusted in six levels depending on the player's taste: From "soft" through "medium" to "hard", with the option of setting a fixed level so that the volume is always the same regardless of the intensity of the keystroke. The CLP-775 has one input and two AUX outputs, as well as two headphone sockets so players can practise in the middle of the night without bothering the neighbours, even if two people are playing the keyboard. They can also play using two voices simultaneously, or assign one voice to the left and one to the right of the keyboard, respectively. For piano lessons, there is also a "Duo" function which allows the keyboard to be split so that teacher and pupil can play on the same octaves.
