Strings for a Vintage Bass Tone for Acoustic/Electric Guitar...look no further
beedoobeedooben 08.05.2022
Warwick black tapewounds are now on my Fender Kingman long scale elecrto/acoustic bass.

Firstly: The fit is superb with none of the binding getting in the way either end. It seems a simple thing but I have used other brands of Tapewounds which clashed with either the nut or the bridge...not here though, the length is perfect.

The Feel: These have the tape wound feel but they are not super smooth like some others...this I find just gives a little 'bite' to them when you want to bend a note. They feel good when sliding up the neck and are not anywhere near as noisy against the frets as the standard acoustic set which came on this bass.

The Tone: I got these strings for the vintage vibe, the smooth feel, quieter against the frets and classic tones both plugged in and acoustic. They deliver on all counts. The plugged in sound is spot of for me and my ear and lets me get close to an upright bass sound. Playing/writing and just working things out they deliver enough tone but it would be wrong to suggest that as an acoustic set they match the volume of a copper wound round set as naturally come with an acoustic bass. However, i have only ever found that an acoustic bass will not hold its own in an acoustic session as the volume is just not enough to match a couple of guitars regardless of what strings i have tried. The lighter gauge of this set is a bonus too I find as there is less tension on the neck/body/bridge which is no bad thing on an acoustic bass.

Conclusion: Over time, I have had 3 different acoustic bass guitars (A Faith, an Aria ProII fretless and now the Fender Kingman) and each has had different makes of tapewounds put on, some costing more than twice the price of the Warwick set.

I would rate these strings as the best value, they are great sounding and have a lovely to them feel to play. When I don't want to take my Double bass out I can take the Acoustic strung with these and plug that in and find i can dial in a really smooth and warm tone without any trouble. They have been on a good few weeks and I find them to be very consistent tuning wise too.

I got one of these sets a couple years ago and it was amazing, loved it.
bought a second set after and a couple strings were dead.
Thomann being great sent a second set to replace it but that also had dead strings.

buyer beware, these are gold when they work but there is a solid chance they'll be dead on arrival.

Très flexibles
Alain B. 237 31.01.2022
