An affordable start on the tenor saxophone

A good beginners' tenor saxophone is distinguished by the fact that it offers a wide range of dynamic sound possibilities and feels comfortable to hold. The Startone STS-75 fulfils these criteria and is currently one of the most affordable Bb saxophones on the market. This instrument impresses with its well-balanced intonation in every register, excellent response, and warm and centred sound. The body and valves are made of brass with a clear coating, and the scope of delivery includes a carrying case, a mouthpiece, cork grease, a strap, and a cleaning cloth.

First notes on the saxophone

Thanks to its stable intonation in all registers and direct response, the STS-75 is the perfect instrument for beginners. Worthy of mention is the saxophone's adjustable thumb rest, which can be easily adapted to every hand shape and thus allows comfortable playing with the right hand. The palm keys have also been positioned to ensure a comfortable playing feel for the left hand, and the metal resonators placed on leather pads support the saxophone’s clear and centred sound. With a mouthpiece that suits their musical style, players will easily be able to achieve the sound they desire, while the required tuning (440 to 443Hz) depends on how the mouthpiece is positioned on the bocal.

For a successful start

A saxophone for beginners should be designed in such a way that it can be played dynamically and with good intonation in all registers. The intonation possibilities shouldn't be too extensive, but they should not be too limited either. The STS-75, which was built for beginners and those switching from a different instrument, fulfils these criteria and is thus suitable for a successful start. Whether they are a beginner or coming to the Bb tenor saxophone from another instrument, players will be making a good choice with the STS-75 thanks to its price-performance ratio. It also is a great choice as an affordable backup instrument for woodwind players.

About Startone

The Startone brand is exclusive to Thomann and was established in 2005 in order to offer high-quality, playable instruments for ambitious beginners even in the lowest price bracket. This resulted in a steadily growing range of wind instruments for beginners, which has since expanded to include keyboard and stringed instruments, accordions, and even drum sets. The product range combines proven quality with low prices – and Thomann naturally provides a full three-year warranty on all Startone instruments. The brand's mission is to always provide the motivated beginner with a reliable, good-quality first instrument at an unbeatable price.

From entry model to open-air instrument

Until fairly recently, it was still hard to find a beginner’s tenor sax that was both good AND affordable – but those days are thankfully over with the STS-75 from Thomann's in-house brand Startone. Thanks to their pleasant playing feel and sound characteristics as well as their affordable price, Startone saxophones have become increasingly popular in recent years. With the STS-75, players get a solid starter model that they can use in many musical fields. This tenor saxophone is suitable for learning the instrument and can also be used as a second instrument during bad weather at open-air events.

In the spotlight: Bb tenor saxophone

The Bb tenor saxophone is part of the saxophone family, the other main members of which are the soprano saxophone, the alto saxophone, and the baritone saxophone. The term "tenor" stands for the vocal register. The tenor saxophone is a transposing instrument, which means that a C played on this saxophone corresponds to a Bb on the piano or the guitar. The C played on a tenor saxophone therefore always sounds a major ninth lower, meaning a c1 for the tenor saxophone is noted as a d2. This is why notes for instruments in C tuning are not compatible with tenor saxophones (separate notation is available, however).

Budget Price Sax

Took me a while to get the hang of this low cost sax. Like most beginners, it was difficult to get even a sound out of this horn. Sounded mostly like a cow's f*rt!

After practising correct mouth and hand positions and lip technique, I finally was able to get some usable melodies out of this saxophone. Took a few moths.

Now what I had to do: Of course I had to buy 2,5 - 3 strength reeds. (The sax came only with one reed, soon chewed to pulp.) Also a good cleaning snake helped me to get rid of all the organic goo that invariably infests the innards. But the most important tip was (and is) to buy a good quality mouth piece. Well, a mouth piece might cost as much as the STS-75 sax, but I do not think you have to go that far. But still invest, like I did, some 40-50 euros on a decent mouth piece and you are good to go!

With my medium-sized mouth piece and good medium strength reeds I can practise easily and even record some bits and pieces in my home studio. (Simple stuff, mostly two or three tone riffs, which I used to play on the keyboard.) The Startone STS-75 is good enough for me for the foreeable future. It might not be the most mellifluous of instruments, the sound being a bit metallic, but it works with rock music (think G. Thorogood & Delaware Destroyers!).

Good for beginners

I bought this as my first saxophone and have been playing it for half a year. Quality and sound for my ears are pretty good. I think this is good saxophone for beginners. I would recommend to buy some other mouth piece with this.

startone sts-75 tenor sax
Chris602 11.11.2013
love the tenor tone sound and response
exquisitely engineered - keys, springs, rockers etc
easy and comfortable to hold
delicately and attractively finished quality superb
excellent quick/efficient delivery
most pleasantly surprised, satisfied and impressed.
quality mouthpiece and superb case with cleaning kit etc all included at great price.
very good finish/lacquer. Lever mechanisms and pads all very good - a lot of delicate effort and precise care has been put into making this instrument which shows both in its sound and looks - it is very 'playable.'
So - all in all a most pleasing experience to purchase and acquire.
V Many thanks again Thomann and Harley Benton.

Few days ago I purchased Startone STS-75 tenor sax and was very excited. I read lot of reviews but now that I got it I am not entirely sure if all those reviews are true. Startone is cheaply done at least this one I got i guess according to the price but I had to pay shipping and custom fee so it cost me little more. Lower tone holes are not covered with lacquered finish on the edges. I did not receive cleaning kit. Just white gloves. No bore brush for the saxophone. just the lid to cover it.I had to change mouthpiece.
I must say that service that Thomann provides is fantastic. They are efficient and very organized.
