Does the job but very expensive for such a simple piece of kit
krnpwr 28.12.2020
As above, this piece of plastic does what it is supposed to do, but is very over-priced fir what it is. It clips neatly into place and of course the mix pre is practically unusable without the L-Mount batteries. Therefore the cost of your mixpre-6 II is actually over €100 more expensive for those looking to use this device for any kind of onsite recording. Delivery and order system with thomann was excellent and without fault. I will also say that Thomann's price is in line with SD, so my objections do not lie with Thomann.

Since I plan to do field recordings where no 220V power supply is available, I need a reliable power source that lasts at least
Urmas Punane 05.02.2025
I started using it and will share some initial observations.

First, the negative – power supply:
4 x AA batteries are definitely not a viable option for powering the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II!

With a fresh set of 4 x AA batteries, I was able to update the firmware to the latest version (in my case, MixPre_9.02), and after the update, the brand-new batteries were already drained!

I then replaced them with another set of fresh batteries from the pack, and I could maybe record for about a minute using two phantom-powered microphones before the battery indicator dropped rapidly, and the device started complaining that fresh batteries were needed!!

After reading other users' comments, I initially couldn't believe it was this bad, but I ended up ordering the following on the same day:

Sound Devices MX-LMount
2x SupraCell Sony NP-F970 batteries
A dual charger for these (SONY NP-F970 Dual)
Since I plan to do field recordings where no 220V power supply is available, I need a reliable power source that lasts at least 3 hours!

On the positive side:
The sound quality is superb!

Ok, let me first say that the MixPre II is a fantastic mobile recorder: nice analog limiters, 32bit float audio, good haptics, sturdy built...a great product.
The Mixpre’s just have one flaw: Powermanagement. Forget about Alkaline batteries, the Mixpre‘s eat them for breakfast: between your first coffee and your cereals the batteries will be gone. What about USB-C then? Well, this is very good to have. But you cannot rely on a flimsy USB-C connection for live recordings as the cable will come off too easily.
So, then we have the MX L-mount. This is a reliable, professional solution which depending on the NPF batteries in use can last you a whole day of shooting/recording. But the battery mount in essence is a lighweight piece of plastic which does not easily connect with the Mixpre’s. Each time I am removing it I am concerned the brackets come off. A price of €25 for this thing would be fair and would still give Sound Devices and its resellers a healthy margin. A price of €50 would be steep. A price >€100 is just excessive. This is where the Zoom F6 has a competitive edge!

Indispensable
