Widely used standard

The Roland V-8HD is a full HD video switcher with HDMI connectivity. It offers a total of eight HDMI inputs and three configurable HDMI outputs. The compact housing of the V-8HD contains many professional tools that considerably simplify live productions and make the use of complex PC setups unnecessary. The most important component: the keying processor with five layers (preview, programme, two picture-in-picture or effect layers and downstream keyer). Thanks to the integrated 4.3'' multiview screen, you can always keep an eye on all connected sources and the selected layers. Other features of the V-8HD include an 18-channel studio-quality digital audio mixer, an automatic video switching function with three different modes, and an integrated scaler for SD sources and older 4:3 devices (HDMI input 7 and 8).

Extensive options

The user interface of the Roland V-8HD is clear and easy to understand with illuminated buttons, logically arranged knobs and the practical T-bar. Thanks to the integrated display, there is no need to purchase and transport a separate control monitor. Those who mainly work in fixed setups can still connect an external monitor for an extended multiview display. For additional ease of use, an iPad can be connected to the V-8HD via a USB-B port. The free Remote app provides an additional user interface with many switching functions, graphically displayed scene presets and virtual audio faders. Even hands-free operation of the mixer by foot is possible. With the separately available single or double foot switches from BOSS, more than 100 different switching commands can be executed.

Lots of power, lots of possibilities

The Roland V-8HD can be found on the desks of ambitious hobby streamers, in the technical rooms of educational institutions and companies, as well as on the sets of elaborate live shows. It is easy to master for beginners, but it also provides experienced users with plenty of functions to visually spice up event recordings and streaming sessions. Those who delve deeper into the functions of the video mixer will discover, among other things, a preset memory for 24 scenes, the possibility of image mirroring (when the camera is hanging overhead in a rig) as well as extensive audio settings for level, delay and effects. Those who are often "on the road" will also appreciate the V-8HD. Weighing only two kilograms, it can be easily transported in a backpack.

About Roland

The Roland company was founded in 1972 in Osaka, Japan, and has been designing and building electronic musical instruments ever since. During its successful history, Roland has launched many ground-breaking instruments, from legendary drum machines such as the TR-808 and the TR-909 to synthesizer classics like Jupiter-8, SH-101 and the iconic TB-303. Besides synthesizers, Roland's workstations and electric pianos are also very popular. Equally well-known is Roland’s subsidiary Boss, under whose brand name it designs and sells principally guitar pedals and effects units. Under the Roland Professional A/V label, the company additionally develops and distributes professional equipment for virtually every branch of audio and video production - from home studios through to commercial applications.

All-in-one concept

Whether it's a recording of a band or orchestra performance or the live broadcast of a press conference - the Roland V-8HD is suitable for use in the creative industry as well as in a business context. The powerful image mixer is prepared for many scenarios: Do you need to quickly integrate an older company laptop with unknown signal resolution into the workflow? Check! Need to play music via a CD player? No problemo! Do presenters require stage directions or speaking notes to be displayed on their screen? Also feasible! It is even possible to control Atomos recording devices via HDMI (start/stop recording). Visual direction, audio mixing, recording management - the Roland V-8HD combines all this and turns it into a simple one-man show.

After research and comparison with the Blackmagic Atem Mini series I decided to go with the Roland V-8HD. It doesn’t disappoint. Does exactly what is says on the tin. For such a complex and capable product, everything just works, mostly from the first slide of the on/off switch. Where settings do need adjusting the menus are easy to navigate using the knobs and buttons but are even easier to deal with on the remote-control App. During operation, the user interface is well laid out and very intuitive with knobs to change variables and push switches to select / confirm. This ease of use swayed me towards the Roland and, after a few hours use I’m convinced this was the right decision. Where space is tight, the built-in monitor is the icing on the cake – with the option of connecting a larger monitor should you prefer. The only thing missing is a USB output to simulate a webcam for streaming, solved with the addition of a Camlink. Happy user, happy to recommend.

Video Switcher für Live Stream
chaosstudio 03.12.2020
Positiv
- Die HDMI Eingänge sind sehr empfindlich (HDMI Kabel bis über 20m ohne Verstärker!);
- 3 HDMI Ausgänge (beim Atem nur einen, entweder Multimonitor oder Programm);
- eingebauter Multimonitor (wenn vor Ort mal gar kein Platz ist);
- klares und überschaubares Bedienkonzept;
- in Grenzen Farbanpassung der HDMI Eingänge möglich, sowie Bildspiegelung H / V einstellbar (Kamera überkopf im Rig hängend);
- Audioanpassung mit Delay und Pegel und diverse Effekte - sehr gut!

Negativ
- lauter und nerviger Lüfter (echt blöd, durch HDMI und begrenzte Kabellängen sitzt man mit im Geschehen);
- zusätzliche Bedienoberfläche nur über iPad App ab IOS 10;
