The RCF Sub 8008-AS MK3 active subwoofer is equipped with two 18" drivers, providing a peak output of 2200W, a maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 137dB, and a low-end frequency response beginning at 30Hz. It is also fitted with an internal digital signal processor, enabling users to alter the settings for both sound optimisation and dispersion patterns, accessed via the rear panel. Settings include crossover frequency, polarity, active cardioid configuration, and a delay. The 18" woofer is driven by a Class D power amplifier, which can handle extreme volume levels with a fast attack and also provides a realistic transient response. These features make the RCF Sub 8008-AS MK3 a perfect addition to sound reinforcement systems where quality is key, especially when powerful bass is going to be an integral part of the experience.
The 8008-AS has two 18" woofers with ceramic magnets and two 4" voice coils, which give it a frequency response of 30Hz to 120Hz. When designing the unit, RCF developed magnets in unique shapes and sizes: This attention to detail optimises performance and reduces sound distortion, all while keeping the subwoofer's weight to a minimum. The top half of the unit's rear panel has two inputs and two outputs in XLR format for stereo operation, as well a push encoder; there's a power twist input below. The gain reduction can be adjusted with great precision, in steps of 0.1dB for the first 10dB, and then in steps of 1dB thereafter. Two quick presses of the encoder, and users can set the subwoofer's delay up to a distance of 20 metres, with a third press enabling a preset for sound optimisation.
This particularly powerful subwoofer is aimed at professional sound technicians who want a compact solution to provide even large events with maximum power. The dispersion angle of the RCF Sub 8008-AS MK3 can be adjusted by selecting one of the twelve presets, with eight presets for extended and linear frequency responses and more punch between 50 and 60Hz, as well as four presets for varying the cardioid pattern. For maximum safety during use, this RCF subwoofer has been developed in accordance with the EN62368-1 standard. Safe and reliable operation is also guaranteed by a modern limiter and the input circuit's low distortion levels. The modules were designed with energy efficiency in mind, so that the subwoofer doesn't require a fan, another potential source of distortion. The integrated power amplifier is attached to an aluminium heat exchanger with no moving parts.
In 1949 the Italian manufacturer RCF began to manufacture microphones and expanded its portfolio in the 1950s with a variety of sound reinforcement products. With the creation of its own development department for loudspeakers, RCF was able to make a name for itself and became a supplier to numerous well-known loudspeaker manufacturers in the USA and Europe. In 1970 the firm began to market its own in-house built hi-fi speakers which have since become part of their product range. From 1980 onwards, RCF has also focused on audio amplification for motor vehicles. Since 1990 the firm has been, and remains today, one of the major suppliers in the professional loudspeaker market.
The solid wooden housing with scratch-resistant polyurea coating make the 8008-AS particularly user-friendly – despite its relatively light weight, it is very robustness. Protection against dust and moisture is provided by an acoustically transparent foam pad on the inside of the grille. There are M20 threads on both the top and on the left-hand side, allowing a full-range loudspeaker to be mounted on the subwoofer, meaning the RCF Sub 8008-AS MK3 can be used flexibly in vertical or horizontal setups. The two ergonomic rubberised carrying handles on each side allow the 80kg heavyweight to be transported with relative ease, and it can also be fitted with bluewheels to make it even easier to move.
