I don't like the concept of a dongle. In fact, I hate it. But you need it these days to make your life easier when using legitimate software products (and you should). So if that's the case, go get one. Make your virtual studio truly portable with this little thing that holds many many licenses (you will never exhaust the number of these that fit onto a single dongle). And it's pretty durable. Probably will last you a long long time.

This iLok USB key: 5 stars. iLok in general: 1 star.
Not that many plugins seem to rely on iLok anymore, with many of them (such as Waves & iZotope) preferring to use a manager app that runs in the background on your machine, which is arguably worse. But if you need to use iLok for the remaining holdouts (namely SoundToys), get a hardware key. Earlier this year I had to reinstall Windows and it was a total chore to re-register the SoundToys plugins there, since I didn't have a chance to transfer the licenses before reformatting. Having a hardware key avoids this disaster scenario.
