14. Visual aids

While mastering remains a process that primarily involves the ears, various visual tools have become invaluable aids. Level meters provide an exact visual image of the level. And they are versatile: In addition to the true peaks, many modern meters can also show the average level (RMS) and probable perceived loudness. Some also have switchable scales that can aid in producing masters that conform to certain broadcasting norms and the like.

Frequency analysers support the mastering engineer by providing a visual representation of the levels across several bands of the frequency spectrum. Goniometers (stereo meters), correlation meters, imagers, bit scopes and other tools can be helpful in order to get a clear picture of the technical and musical properties of the audio material.
