SEM filter from Doepfer
Jonathan64 11.09.2013
Doepfer now make a vast range of different filters, each with a different character. Many of them are based on "classic" filters from old analogue synths by such famous manufacturers as Moog and Oberheim, and this module is an example of the Oberheim SEM filter. It provides high and low pass outputs and a band pass too, and by mixing the first two a notch filter effect is available. Doepfer state on their website that the filter does not self-oscillate (in keeping with the original model it is based on) but there is a simple modification that you can do which will provide this facility if you want to. Doepfer are actually very good at publishing suggested modifications to some of their modules, with the the proviso, of course, that you will void the warranty if you do modify the equipment. In my opinion this is one filter that every modular set up should have, not least for it's ability to introduce a pleasant mild distortion to the sound when overdriven.

Ha
a very good and affordable filte

Hi there,

the A-106-5 sem filter is a nice and cheap filter from Doepfer. One of the its great advantage is that it offers over most competitors is its ability to act as a High pass, Low pass, Band pass and Notch Filter ! not that common in that price range.

in terms of sound colours, this filter deserves is Oberheim nickname and definitely produce some sweet and warm tones. ideal for pads and strings like sounds.

in my small setup it sits next to a doepfer a 108 moog filter. both are really nice and i have to say they complete each other quite well !

well... i really like this filter so far !

I had some problems with it, it's on warranty repair, I'll see when I get it back if the problems are solved (clicks and other weird stuff happened, like a short circuit inside the module...). but he sound is very good, not a self-oscilliant filter, more of a smooth one, very good for drums I think, and/or to filter the sounds coming from external mics or radio music module. For a synth voice I always prefer a 24db ;)

Good for the price

Sounds good but doesn't really hold its ground next to pricier eurorack filters. Has an SEM vibe but obviously doesn't sound identical. Would recommend for someone getting into eurorack on a budget like I was.
