The TWS 2864-S Combo is a single-channel all-tube amp for electric guitar, hand-built in Germany. With 14W of power, it's perfect for practising, studio sessions, and club gigs. Behind its silver fabric grille sits a 12" Celestion G12M Greenback, a classic speaker known since the '60s for delivering warm, punchy guitar tones thanks to its ceramic magnet. TWS has deliberately kept signal path simple, to deliver as unadulterated a sound as possible. Instead of a traditional three-dial tone stack, the amp features a streamlined bass control with just three detented positions – and which actually takes effect before the amp starts to clip, giving an especially clear tone. The treble control, on the other hand, can boost or tames the highs coming out of the amp's back end.
The interior of the TWS 2864-S Combo is packed with vintage-inspired circuitry: An EF86 tube in the preamp stage, a hand-picked 12AX7 as the phase inverter, and a pair of 6V6s in the power section all work together to shape focused lows, warm and full-sounding mids, and sweet, rounded highs. Point-to-point soldering keeps the signal path short and free of connectors, which helps minimise contact resistance and delivers an exceptionally clear sound. A standout feature on the TWS stable of amps – and integrated in the 2864 too, of course – is the proprietary WonderVol master volume, which switches into bypass when fully opened, letting the head produce the defined character of amps without a master volume control. Regardless, guitarists can use the 2864's Warm/Hot switch to set the output to full or reduced power. The special circuitry ensures that, when the master is rolled back, the sound stays open and full, just like a cranked amp, even at everyday listening volumes. That's why TWS calls this feature WonderVol – it's wonderful!
The TWS 2864-S Combo is made for ambitious amateurs, working pros, and all vintage guitar tone aficionados. Thanks to its solid construction, it'll be a reliable companion for guitarists who gig frequently, while players who value durability and low maintenance will particularly appreciate the fact that the mechanical and electrical components are kept completely separate. The amp's electronics sit in a rugged aluminium chassis, while the cabinet is built from 12mm birch plywood, making it tough enough for frequent touring. At just under half a metre tall and weighing only 18kg, it should never be too much of a burden to carry. Fans of purist amp designs - amps that don't need built-in reverb or an effects loop, or even a recording output, MIDI connectivity, or connections for headphones and footswitches - will find exactly what they're looking for here.
