T-Rex Mudhoney II

190

Dual Distortion / Fuzz Pedal for Electric Guitar

T-Rex tinkers great pedals; Having become legendary (among bluesmen), the Alberta is a modern Tubescreamer with a great sound. Those for whom the Alberta was too tame would find the Mudhoney to be just right. The Mudhoney's core sound is somewhat harder, but above all more flexible than the Alberta, being able to create countless sounds, from a soft jazz (rock) sound set to fuzzy brutal distortion. Aside from the usual controls of Gain, Level and Tone, the Boost switch ensures endless gain and sustain.

Now there is the Mudhoney II and it is a double source of joy: Everything that was good in the first model has now been doubled: Two identical channels that allow, for example, you to set a crunch and a Lead channel. Along with the pure Amp sound then you have a three-channel system - which is completely sufficient for most guitar players. Only the name is still not always right - It would not be right to call it Muddy, since it allows even chords to be clearly defined with hearty distortion.

An excalibur of a distortion pedal.
Anonymous 12.12.2015
Solidly made and robust out of the box with a really quite straightforward front panel considering it offers two channels or voicings.

I'm a little unsure as yet whether this simplicity is a good thing or whether it could use a little more sound sculpting. But rather like a tubescreamer its often a case of matching the tone to your guitar and amp and then seeing what feels right in terms of gain.

Its at this point the Mudhoney really excels. While labelled a distortion pedal it can provide an outstanding transparent warm overdrive that pushes your amps natural tone nicely. But set one (or both) channels to "boost" and you've got a snarling beast on tap.

It sits really well in front of my Orange Head and has that "british classic" feel to my ears.

The sound is hard to praise enough. It oozes warmth but has some real teeth with some fuzz creeping in on higher gain settings. Plenty of oomph and bottom end. Highly recommended.

Two times from subtle to mayhem
WardBest 22.06.2020
A very nice and musically sounding overdrive/distortion, with a great sustain, that is in fact 2 times the same pedal in 1 enclosure. It can be used as a booster with very low gain setting or it can give you sounds from very pleasing crunch to harmonically rich distortion with much depth (allthough not the typical modern metal sound) and works perfectly with my amp's (Laney Lionheart) natural breakup sound and reacts very well to dynamic playing (the harder you play, the more saturation you get). The only con is that the plastic tone knob is maybe a bit close to the footh switch for people that get carried away by now sweet tone of your guitar. Very versatile super sounding stompbox at an incredible price. Highly recommended!

T
Sweet & Dirty!
TheBedroomRocker 07.05.2020
Watch my full demo and review on YouTube: is a great quality pedal from a boutique manufacturer on a very decent price point. It sits in between a distortion and a fuzz with a thick bottom end and loads of sweet harmonic content. Normal mode offers great feeling and dynamics, while Boost mode has more gain, compression, and sustain. I set one side on Normal and one side on Boost. It sounds killer with single coils and humbuckers and into darker or brighter amps. Differently from most dual drive pedals that offer boost/drive/distortion, the Mudhoney is not very flexible nor fully featured, but it really nails in the fuzzstortion area and has a very unique and special voice! Ohhh, and it's yellow!

I bought it as soon as its price dropped in February 2019 and delivery took some 3 months because stock was in-and-out all the time. Now Thomann seems to have a more steady supply of Mudhoneys... go get it!

P
Perfect pedal for my needs.
PeeduMamma 19.08.2019
I use this pedal for jamming with my band, performing live and practising.
So far it has filled all my "distortion" needs and I'd say its quite the beast. I like that you can choose 2 tones, sometimes u just need a little bit of distortion w tone 1 before u go crazy with tone 2.
I think that it is a very good pedal especially for the "sale" price its going right now!
RECOMMEND.
