A true classic on the rims

The Sennheiser e 904 is a tried-and-tested dynamic microphone for all types of percussion instruments, but one especially suitable for miking snare drums and toms. With a weight of just 125g, its compact design, and the integrated rim clamp, it's ideal for mounting on a drum's hoop, where it can be positioned flexibly and easily. Despite its low weight, the Sennheiser e 904 is well protected by its robust metal casing and wire mesh guard, making it practically impervious to the accidental "misfires" that can happen to even the very best drummers.

Neutral and transparent sound

The Sennheiser e 904 is a dynamic instrument microphone with a cardioid polar pattern and a uniform frequency response that delivers a neutral, transparent, and cleanly balanced sound. These transmission characteristics allow musicians and technicians alike to express a high degree of creativity in their individual sonic concepts, providing a broad scope for different sound designs and musical styles, whether live or in the studio. In every situation, thanks to its fast pickup, the Sennheiser e 904 offers flawless transient response for a precise attack.

Thanks to its excellent transmission performance – with a precise attack and voluminous overall spatial characteristics – it generates an appealing, well-balanced sound. Many users have also had great success using the Sennheiser e 904 to mike wind instruments – its qualities make it an attractive proposition for trumpets, saxophones, or trombones, not just for percussion instruments. As such, the Sennheiser e 904 is something of an all-rounder when it comes to recording musical instruments, and will provide reliable service in a great vareity of situations.

About Sennheiser

In June 1945, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser founded the Wennebostel Laboratory, which initially produced measuring equipment. Commissioned by Siemens in 1945, the young company developed the MD-1 microphone, which was launched in 1946. After the development of further microphones, the company was renamed Sennheiser Electronic in 1958. Two years later, Sennheiser introduced the MD 421 dynamic microphone, which is still in production today and still held in high esteem by many sound engineers. Further groundbreaking developments, such as the HD 414 headphones and the MD 441 microphone classic, hugely enhanced the company’s international reputation, eventually making Sennheiser one of the leading manufacturers of microphone and headphone systems in the world.

Rim mounting live on stage

The Sennheiser e 904 is best mounted directly on the rim of the drum being recorded live, using the integrated rim clamp. The special design of the clamp makes installation simple, quick, and effortlessly reliable. However, when used on a drum without a rim, the Sennheiser e 904 can also be attached to a stand, or even other clamps, thanks to its integrated stand bracket; this makes an additional microphone stand unnecessary and ensures uncomplicated pick-up for hoopless drums and other instruments.

Quare Job!
Anonymous 23.11.2015
I purchased four of these in 2013 when I decided to buy myself a touring mic package along with two Se1A's for overheads, a sennheiser e901 for kick and a beyerdynamic mc930 for hi hats.

Using the E904s for Snare and three Toms gave me just what I wanted. They captured the tone of the rock Kit perfectly in every circumstance, I have since used them in all types of genres when I'm mixing and really couldn't fault them.

Thankfully working with good Drummers these mics have virtually have no sign of wear or tear and the clamps have been though hundreds of gigs since and have not let me down yet. Definitely a great mic.

A
compact, easy to install and sound great on floor toms
Anonymous 17.04.2016
We use it for Floor Toms. the mic is easy to attach on almost any kind of drums. Never had any issue with it.
Due it's compactness it is also pretty easy to integrate in in a live setup, without interfering with cymbals who might be just above.
Sound: it has more or less the same sound as the E604, but this one has better respons in the lower frequencies. (drawback is that it also picks up your Kick Drums - but that's were gates are designed for :-) )
The only (minor) drawback is that the bag delivered with it barely fits the mic. (at least if you don't want to remove the holder every time.)

BB
Great Tom Tom microphone
Broken Bear 25.01.2024
I needed a good quality microphone for a floor Tom that has a deep low end true to the instrument. This microphone delivers coupled with the excellent clip on attachment I couldn’t be happier with my choice. As always the very helpful reviews on Thomann gave me the final push to order myself one. Brilliant.

Just Great.

Tried finding them online second hand for a good price but couldn't find it, so I had to buy them new here by Thomann.
My theory is that because its such a good reliable mic, not often someone will really feel the need to sell them.

As I do sound for my bands and other bands, I enjoy the many ways of using this mic.
For congas, toms, other World/Latin percussion...
My main reason for getting these mics was to mic up a Brasilian drum called Zabumba. (A held drum where one skin serves as a Snare, and the other side serves as a kick drum).
I avoided clip mics for some time but with the Zabumba it became inevitable. using two E 904 or 2 E 409 is basically the only way PROs do it in Brasil. great sound, less stands, less complications, percussionist can dance around the stage and have a stable mic system. =)
I am very happy with my purchase.
Cheers!
