5. Active Pickups

In addition to the passive pickup concepts we've covered some manufacturers rely on a built-in guitar pre-amp. Normally these are powered by a 9V battery and they ensure noise-free operation and a low-impedance signal. This guarantees loss-free signal transmission, regardless of the length of the signal path (cable length). The sound of active pickups is clear and full and due to the very weak magnetic field of these pickups, the string vibration is hardly affected, which leads to an increase in sustain (length of the decaying tone). Guitarists like Steve Lukather and Kirk Hammett swear by the sound of their active EMG pickups.
