Multipurpose mic with a reliable punch.
SessionDrummerSteve 23.06.2014
I have used this microphone for many applications from vocals to percussion.
I find the sound slightly brighter but with a more solid midrange than an SM57 on guitar amps which helps the sound cut through in a busy mix.
Inside a kick drum the RE20 provides plenty of attack from the beater whilst still offering a quite traditional bass drum sound, not hyped like there Audix range. Also been very successful as a rear mic for a cajon.
The proximity effect is very controlled on this mic due to the shape and design which is perfect for vocalists who either prefer to hand hold the mic when performing / recording or have poor microphone technique when singing.
No, it's not cheap but you get a very robust mic in build quality and sound!

VP
A very versatile microphone
Vale Perkons 29.07.2016
Over the past four years of owning this product it has become one of the essential parts of my microphone locker. It can be used on a variety of sources - on a kick drum for a vintage, natural sound, on a bass amp and on vocals (I especially prefer the RE20 on female voices). Surprisingly enough the RE20 has become my go-to microphone for guitar amps (both clean and overdriven). After trying it on amps a couple of times I fell in love with the sound I was hearing on my monitors - the amps sound powerful and nuanced without getting harsh and there is a pleasant low midrange warmth that I just can't get with more traditional amp microphones. The RE20 is my primary guitar amp microphone and the results are great, my clients love it. I took one star off from "Total" and "Quality" though because the microphone upon arrival had reversed polarity output and sounded thin on some preamps, so I had to return it for maintenance. It came back perfectly fixed up so kudos to Thomann.
